A physician, usually an internist or endocrinologist, who specializes in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Chronic diabetic conditions include Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Patients with diabetes have too much glucose in their systems and long term complications of diabetes, regardless of the type, can be life-threatening and disabling. Some of them are


  • Cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease with chest pain (angina), heart attack, stroke and narrowing of arteries (atherosclerosis)
  • Nerve damage (neuropathy), which can result in the loss of feeling and more
  • Kidney damage (nephropathy), which could result in kidney failure or irreversible end-stage kidney disease
  • Eye damage (retinopathy) that could lead to blindness, cataracts and glaucoma
  • Foot damage, which might require amputation
  • Skin and mouth conditions including bacterial and fungal infections and gum infections
  • Oesteoporosis
  • Alzhiemer’s disease
  • Cancer
